Wheatgrass benefits for pets

Wheatgrass for Pets

Wheatgrass comes from the young grass of triticum aestivum, wheat plant, and is rich in iron, magnesium, calcium, selenium vitamins A, E and B12.

Wheatgrass provides many health benefits for most pets, such as dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, etc.  Often, dogs and cats eat grass when they are playing or walking outdoors. They crave the minerals found in grass when they are feeling sick.

Feeding your pets with homegrown wheatgrass is a good addition to their daily diet. It can improve the coat of your pet. As a daily dose, try using 1 ounce of wheat grass juice for 20 lbs of pet weight. It is best to start with a small amount and increase, if needed.

Many pet owners who are environmentally conscious are keen on feeding their pets ‘live foods’ like wheatgrass that contain enzymes. Enzymes are vital to maintain normal digestive and metabolic processes in our pets. These enzymes are lacking in dried or canned foods that are processed.

  • Blood cleansing
  • Digestion aid & constipation prevention
  • Energy boosting

Ways to use wheatgrass for your pets

  • Buy or cut fresh wheatgrass, blend it in a food processor and include it in daily food.
  • Some pets may like to chew on it as it is still growing and this provides extra fiber.
  • Adding a dash of wheatgrass juice to your pet’s water bowl is refreshing and healthy.
  • For open sores or wounds, use the wheatgrass juice to clean the wound, then add a poultice with the pulp of wheatgrass and apply it to the wound and wrap with a clean bandage. (Consult with your veterinarian for open wounds or sores that aren’t healing or those that appear angry or oozing.)
